On a rainy New Orleans night many years ago, David Hennessy, a nationally-prominent police superintendent, was gunned down by unknown assailants, identified only as 'Dagoes.' On the basis of this vague and dubious evidence, authorities rounded up nineteen Italian -Americans. The affair produced serious repercussions, leading to the near impeachment of the President and to the brink of war with Italy.
