L.S. Lowry's "matchstick men" have become one of the most readily recognisedmages in 20th-century British art. His vivid and faithful portrayal of thendustrial north has led to his adoption as "the people's artist", though artistorians and critics have sought for years to analyse his significance andppeal.;Over 10,000 works by Lowry are known, ranging from finished oilaintings to hastily drawn sketches. The industrial scene was his mostrequent subject but he also painted seascapes and portraits. He was a greatumorist and had intense insight into human nature, characterising it withoutentiment.
