In this book we hear the voices of eyewitnesses of the English Civil War, conveying what it felt like to fight at Edgehill, or watch your house being ransacked by looting soldiers, or find your brother fighting for the 'other side', or live in Oxford while Charles I used the city as his headquarters. More than fifty participants in the war are heard, and their accounts are skilfully arranged, juxtaposed and placed in context by John Adair's sympathetic text.
