Gustave Baumann's Southwest
Joseph Traugott
Early in his career Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) lived in Chicago and spent time in rural Indiana and the Northeast, but he found his true home in New Mexico. He moved to Santa Fe in 1918 and spent the rest of his life there, producing a wealth of woodblock prints depicting the southwestern landscape and its people. As his images grew more complex, he devised innovative printing techniques, creating luminous prints with warm, blended hues. This book reproduces more than fifty of the artist's woodblock prints and gouaches and features an essay by New Mexico Museum of Art curator Joseph Traugott.
