A Most Fortunate Life

At 92, Buck Harless brims with memories and recollections of an abundant life. The publication of his memoir gives readers an opportunity to contemplate and better understand a unique individual from the mountains of southern West Virginia. It's well known that Buck Harless attained substanial business success; that he was born poor and lost his mother soon after birth is less so. Some writers sought to portray him with epic notion, using words like baron and tycoon, but failed to portray his gentle, down-to-earth spirit. There are conflicting opinions about him because bias sees what it wants to see. With little to go on, people tend to form judgments that miss the mark. Conventional wisdom suggests that southern West Virginia is so rugged and geographically isolated that it's limited in opportunities to fulfill the American Dream. Yet, his is a remarkable story of the American Dream splendidly come true. As a child growing up in the little town of Gilbert in Mingo County, he dreamed simply of being able to own a car one day, but he accomplished much more. It is a story of a devoted couple who gave him love and a home; of a community, close-knit and nurturing; of optimism that bubbles within him and an unflagging willingness to try; of friendship that he gives to others and the wealth of friendship that he's received in return; of failure and redemption; and of growth and a commitment to give back rather than acquire.
