As The Who's legendary bassist, John Entwistle was a key architect of the band's sound. His stoic stage appearance - standing still, tucked neatly behind his dynamic bandmates, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend - belied a massive sonic presence. Early in his career, Entwistle fantasised about the guitars and basses he would one day own. As The Who became successful, he began to realise that dream, obtaining a wide variety of bass and electric guitars from top manufacturers like Fender, Gretsch, Rickenbacker, Warwick and Gibson. The collection Entwistle left behind when he died in 2002 - hundreds of basses and guitars, all of them outstanding examples of the form - is nothing short of astonishing. It includes many of his favourite 'playing' guitars - the Fender bass he used to record 'My Generation', the Rickenbacker he used on 'Tommy' - as well as numerous collector editions and custom built pieces, some never played and each worth a small fortune. Bass Culture is a display of the finest pieces from Entwistle's collection, complete with the personal notes he kept on each of them.
